A windy walk to the post box!
This week we have been writing 'real' letters! This morning we walked to the post box at the end of the village and posted them. As you will see from the photos it was very windy and certainly blew away the cobwebs. The children were very well behaved, walking sensibly and crossing the roads safely. Watch out for the postman/woman to see if the children addressed their letters correctly. Please let us know via the blog if they arrive safely.

A note from Mrs Riggs
Hello!
What a great week we have had in Class 2! We have been looking at endangered animals in
English, using the wonderful book Dear Greenpeace as our base. The children have worked
extremely hard, researching different animals and writing a letter containing a question to find out more. One of my many favourite questions was, "Do whales need friends?". This tied in beautifully with our Christian Value this half term; friendship.
We also ventured into using some new technology this week! On Thursday, the children used the school ipads, working their way through a presentation on endangered animals. They were able to write about what they had already learned, draw pictures of their chosen animal and answer questions in a quiz. Great work, and some excellent artists among us!! They have all been given a link, in their planners, to complete a small piece of homework, using the same website. I know quite a few of them have already completed the homework; I love your enthusiasm!! The children do not need to have access to an ipad for this homework. They can use any device, logging on to http://www.nearpod.com, then skip the tour, click on "Join Session", and the PIN is DHUSR.
I have managed to speak to a couple of parents over the last couple of weeks, and it has been lovely to meet you! Apologies to those of you that I haven't said hello to yet. Thank you to all for your continued support.

Hockey, Thinking Things Through Maths and lots more...
We have been working very hard in Class 2 this week. In English we have been writing to the zoo to ask for a pet. The requests were very varied, ranging from cats to dinosaurs! I wonder if we will receive any...! In Maths we have been learning quick ways of adding and subtracting 9, 10 and 11. We also enjoyed a TTT activity which involved solving problems by adding 3 numbers. Despite the cold weather, we enjoyed our hockey lesson with Nikita. The children kept moving to make sure they stayed warm, I imagine they slept well Tuesday night! In Science we have been learning about animals. Year One were comparing different animals with Mrs MacMorrin and Year Two were finding out about animals and their babies with me. Well done to the children who have been reading their books on Bug Club and having a go at the maths activities on Active Learn. Year Two have some more home learning tasks in their new books, details are in the planner.

Happy New Year and Welcome back!
It was lovely to see everyone return to school on Monday and hear about many of the exciting things you have been up to during the holiday.
In English we have started our unit on writing letters, we began with a 'thank you' letter to Santa or a family member for a favourite Christmas present. This week's grammar focus is capital letters (yr1) and using commas correctly when writing lists (yr2). Spelling focus is the correct spelling of the days of the week, ensuring a capital letter is used. In Maths year one have been working with numbers, finding 1 more and 1 less, 2 more and 2 less and relating this to written number sentences. Year two have been working on place value, understanding the value of different digits in 2 and 3 digit numbers. In RE this term we will be learning about special books and stories, in particular the Bible but we also be finding out about special books and words from other faiths.
The children enjoyed their first hockey session with Nikita from Colchester United on Tuesday and they will be doing Dance on Thursday afternoons. Weather permitting, Tuesday PE will be outside so please ensure your child has trainers and a tracksuit.
Fortnightly Home Learning Tasks will continue in the red books, this week's is about the children's own special books, stories, poems or songs. In addition to this the year two children will be bringing home a Grammar task and Maths activity linked to the week's focus, as explained in Mr Wainwright's letter. Details of this will be in the Home/School planner. Year One children will be assigned relevant activities on Active Learn and phonics activities as appropriate.
Our new theme is Canada and the Arctic, Fridays promise to be lots of fun when the children will be doing Art and theme related activities with Mrs MacMorrin.
Thank you for your help with developing the children's independence by saying 'goodbye' at the outside door allowing children to come into class by themselves.
